Wow Del Toro's next movie (as Producer) is going to start filming in May, sounds like another Vampyre movie! I love Vampyres... Del Toro co-wrote the script, so I have high hopes for this movie... I'll post a little mo0re about the director Del Toro has chosen later, but he seems quite capable...

Marley And Me

This movie's taken a lttle while to finally make it over to the UK, after being in the States for quite a while before hand, and I was quite excited to see it after hearing that it topped the box office in America...

Synopsis

After their wedding, newspaper writers John and Jennifer Grogan move to Florida. In an attempt to stall Jennifer's "biological clock", John gives her a puppy. While the puppy Marley grows into a 100 pound dog, he loses none of his puppy energy or rambunctiousness. Meanwhile, Marley gains no self-discipline. Marley's antics give John rich material for his newspaper column. As the Grogans mature and have children of their own, Marley continues to test everyone's patience by acting like the world's most impulsive dog.
Written by Ken Miller

Starring: Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston Directed by: David Frankel

Storyline: 3 Stars

Just a simple American storyline, nice and easy to follow!

Emotions: 5 Stars

This is truly the movie's strong point... I think I'd have to say that it was the most emotional ending in the whole history of cinema... people were very audibly weeping at the end!

Humour: 3 Stars

Some really funny parts scattered throughout...

Conclusion

If you like a nice bit of emotion in your movies, you've certainly come to the right place, you bound to cry however hard your heart may be!
Definaely worth the watch at any rate!

Watchmen

I'm finding this movie particularly hard to review, it's such a complex movie, and quite incomparable to other movies...
If you are dead sick of the usual Hollywood movies, and are dying for something original, I think you've come to the perfect place, and you can jack the rating up to about a 4 Star or even a 5.
The movie certainly comes across to me as being a thinker's movie, and discusses some pretty hardcore philosophical subjects. But also scattered throughout is some great no-brainer fight sequences...
I'd have to recommend you read the book before you view the movie, as I went without previouly reading the book, and found the storyline a bit too disjointed.
I went to the cinema hoping to see something quite simular to 300, as it is the same director, but it's something quite different, but nevertheless, I think they chose the perfect director for the movie... I still prefer 300, but that's just my own personal preference...

Synopsis

"Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity... but who is watching the Watchmen?"
Written by T-Hen

Starring: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Patrick Wilson Directed by: Zack Snyder

Fantasy Take

Some great characters, quite original, but I reckon, like my previous review of Franklyn, that this movie is just perhaps a little too weird and doesn't make enough sense...

Storyline: 2 Stars

I think this movie could have a great story if it were a little bit easier to watch for the general viewer... Storline's just a little too disjointed for my liking...

Graphics: 5 Stars

Superb graphics, you really need to watch the movie to understand how good these graphics are!

Acting: 3 Stars

All reletively unknown actors... They did pretty well though...

Music: 2 Stars

There were one or two great musical moments, but there were a few parts where I just didn't think the music conveyed the right emotions...
There is also one little annoying part where the music seemed to tell the audience that the movie was over when there was about half an hour yet to go, conveying a false ending, which repulsed my senses to the real ending.

Emotions: 3 Stars

There are some pretty emotional parts in this movie, but it's not the selling feature...

Action: 4 Stars

Like in 300, Zack Snyder is well able to carry out some great action sequences, and for folks like me who enjoy a bit of blood and gore with their movie, you are in for a treat!
Random Observation
Mr Manhatten's penis is bigger than mine!

Conclusion

Although there are some great parts to this movie, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, just to people that are dying for something new and different!

Notes on: Run Fatboy Run

This is a new idea, so your comments will be much appreciated.

The general idea is that I take notes as I'm watching the movie, just random things that enter my head... Bit weird, but I saw it in the Empire magazine, and thought it was quite a good idea... praps a bit scattered to start with but I hope that it will gradually take shape in future reviews!

  • Has to be good, has a clip from Lord of The Rings in it!

  • Ha ha I love those Hobbit ears, I think I should walk 'round with some of those... Do you think it'll suit me?

  • Lol he's just like me at the gym :D I don't feel too bad now! (beginners for you)

  • Ahh the Fratellies get a bit in the soundtrack! I think they're great!

  • The Little boy's quite a good actor, I find him quite amusing and funny...

  • There's actually some great songs in the soundtrack... pretty nicely done

  • and perfect, to round it all up, there's a nice emotional ending!

Final Rating: 3 Stars

Push

I absolutely loved this movie, and it is with reluctance that I rate it with 3 stars, but as ever I prefer to rate movies for their artistic value rather than how much I enjoy them...

Synopsis

A group of young American ex-pats with telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities are hiding from a clandestine U.S. government agency. They must utilize their different talents and band together for a final job enabling them to escape the agency forever.

Source: IMDb

Starring: Dakota Fanning, Djimon Hounsou, and Chris Evans Directed by: Paul McGuigan

Fantasy Take

Extremely interesting legend, a number of different kinds of psychics with varios powers, quite simular to lasy years' Jumper, but way better in my opinion, let's hope for more sequels to come!

Dakota Fanning's got great hair too :)

Storyline: 3 Stars

Pretty simple story... nothing special.

Graphics: 4 Stars

Excellent graphics, taking into account that the movie was made with a fairly low budget

Acting: 3 Stars

Dakota Fanning's performance was exceptional and deserves 5 stars (and an oscar), Djimon Hounsou, was particularly good too, but the rest of the acting was on a whole fairly average...

Music: 3 Stars

Music was good, but not amazing...

Emotions: 3 Stars

I wouldn't have said that the movie was particularly emotional, but Dakota was given a short period to win the hearts of the viewers!

Action: 4 Stars

Some pretty good fight scenes, certain to keep the guys amused for a while...

Conclusion

I loved the movie, and think it's one of the best movies ever, but I won't say it's for everyone, it's more of a genre movie...

Franklyn

REALLY weird, I didn't have a clue what was happening throughout this movie... I just put it down to another Brittish mess-up....

Synopsis

Preest is a masked vigilante detective, searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Esser is a broken man, searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London's homeless. Milo is a heartbroken thirty-something desperately trying to find a way back to the purity of first love. Emilia is a beautiful art student; her suicidal art projects are becoming increasingly more complex and deadly.
Source: ~IMDb

Starring: Eva Green, Ryan Phillippe, Sam Riley, and Bernard Hill. Directed by: Gerald McMorrow

Fantasy Take

It's weird, and yes, that is part of the fantasy genre, but I think it's way too weird... The city of Meanwhile looks really cool though as a fantasy town!

Storyline: 1 Stars

Seriously, I didn't have a clue what was happing in this movie... it was all like giberish to me...

Graphics: 4 Stars

I must admit I was suprised at the quality of the graphics, which was the original reason why I watched this movie after viewing a magnificent trailer.
I think the graphics is really the movies redeeming point...

Acting: 2 Stars

I must say I was rather disappointed by Bernard Hill's acting in this movie, although Eva Green's performance made up for it in my opinion!

Music: 3 Stars

The music was rather exciting in parts, though not at all a masterpiece...

Conclusion

What a bunch of nonsense... but pretty nice graphics anyway... needless to say, I'm not going to recommend this movie...

Gran Torino

A pure classic! Nothing more needs be said... I haven't rated a movie with 5 stars since Hellboy 2, and that says a lot for this movie!

Synopsis

Walt Kowalski is a widower who holds onto his prejudices despite the changes in his Michigan neighborhood and the world around him. Kowalski is a grumpy, tough-minded, unhappy an old man, who can't get along with either his kids or his neighbors, a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1972 Gran Torino he keeps in mint condition. When his neighbor Thao, a young Hmong teenager under pressure from his gang member cousin, tries to steal his Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Thao's family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them from the gangs that infest their neighborhood.
Written by alfiehitchie

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Ahney Her, Christopher Carley and Bee Vang Directed by: Clint Eastwood

Storyline: 5 Stars

Excellent, just excellent! Eastwood realises that a god movie doesn't have to have a complicated plot, as most directors seem to think... Eastwood makes a movie that's both superb and easy viewing at the same time... quite a pleasure to watch!

Acting: 4 Stars

Clint's great and an extremely funny actor, all the rest of the cast fit in just nicely!

Music: 3 Stars

Music is relatively good, but isn't the driving force in this masterpiece...

Emotions: 5 Stars

Quite light and fun to start off with, but soon Eastwood gently stirs up your inward emotions, throwing them in all different directions!

Humour: 5 Stars

Like Del Toro in Hellboy 2, Eastwood uses the power of laughter as a tool in helping the audience to connect with the characters... and how skillfully does he wield this power!

Conclusion

A masterpiece like none have ever seen before, need I say more? Watch it!

The Secret Of Moonacre

I had a bit of time to spare, so as usual, I spend my free time down at the cinema. I like Fantasy, so Moonacre seemed to be the obvious choice to watch at the time... and by the time I had left the cinema, I think I'd have to say that this s the best stuff that has come out of the UK for a long time!

Synopsis

When 13 year old Maria Merryweather's father dies, leaving her orphaned and homeless, she is forced to leave her luxurious London life to go and live with Sir Benjamin, an eccentric uncle she didn't know she had, at the mysterious Moonacre Manor. Soon Maria finds herself in a crumbling moonlit world torn apart by the hatred of an ancient feud with the dark and sinister De Noir family. Maria discovers that she is the last Moon Princess and, guided by an unlikely mix of allies, she must overcome her family's pride in order to unearth the secrets of the past before the 5000th moon rises and Moonacre disappears into the sea forever.

Written by Monica Penders

Starring: Ioan Gruffudd, Dakota Blue Richards, Tim Curry, Natascha McElhone, and Juliet Stevenson Directed by: Gabor Csupo

Fantasy Take

Great fantasy! Based purely on legend, yet quite easily related to! a few nice creatures too...

Storyline: 4 Stars

It's a nice story, simple is perfec for a fantasy movie!

Graphics: 4 Stars

Beautiful graphics, creating the desired effect... really lovely old house shown in the movie too!

Acting: 3 Stars

In my estimation Dakota Blue Richards is about the worst child actress ever, but I recon she's slightly more tolerable in this movie than she was in The Golden Compass... Ioan Gruffudd is superb as ever in this movie...

The remaining cast are all quite good and play their parts as good as can be expected!

Music: 3 Stars

The music is relatively good, though nothing outstanding...

Emotions: 5 Stars

This is the aspect in which this film realy excels, creating a set of morals which are used in the movie's favour in a few tear-jerking moments...

Conclusion

A lovely movie... smooth storytelling throughout, working to a beautiful climax... a certain recommend!
